Haas Defeats Trahan in US Amateur Round of 16

Aug. 22, 2002

Bloomfield Hills, MI – Clemson senior D.J. Trahan was defeated in the third round of the US Amateur on Thursday afternoon 2 up by Bill Haas. The match took place at Oakland Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield Hills, MI. It was a battle of South Carolina upstate golfers and ACC golfers, as Clemson’s Trahan is a native of Inman, SC, while Haas is a Wake Forest player who lists Greenville, SC as his hometown.

Trahan had the upper hand through the first nine holes, leading by three holes at the turn. But, Haas won the 10th hole and gained momentum. Trahan could not hit his drives in the fairway and Haas took advantage. The two golfers were all square heading to the 16th hole. But, Haas gained his first lead of the match when he won the 16th, then he clinched the victory by making a 10-foot birdie putt on the par three 17th.

Trahan will return to Clemson this weekend where he will lead the Tigers as a senior this year. He was the 2002 Jack Nicklaus Award winner as a junior. The Tigers open the 2002-03 season at the Topy Cup in Japan the weekend of September 7.
