Golf No. 2 in Sagarin Rankings Heading Into Spring Season

Jan. 7, 2004

Clemson’s 2003-04 golf team is currently No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings heading into the spring season. The Tigers, who began last fall as the preseason No. 1, are just behind Florida in the national rankings. Rounding out the top five in the rankings are Georgia, UCLA, and Georgia Tech.

Clemson competed in four stroke events last fall and finished fourth or better in each of them. The Tigers also competed in the Match Play event at Myrtle Beach last November. Clemson’s best finish of the fall season was second in October at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA.

Four of the five starters on this year’s Clemson squad are currently in the top 100 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Leading the way is senior Matt Hendrix, who is second in the latest U.S. Amateur rankings and ninth in the Sagarin collegiate rankings. Hendrix led the Tigers with a 70.00 stroke average in the fall. He had two top-10 finishes to tie for the team lead as well.

Gregg Jones is seventh in the latest U.S. Amateur rankings and 26th in the Sagarin rankings. Jones, a senior from Florence, SC, had a 71.18 stroke average in the fall and two top-10 finishes. Jack Ferguson is also in the top 50 of both individual rankings. Ferguson, who had a 70.91 stroke average for the fall, is 24th in the Sagarin rankings and tied for 50th in the U.S. Amateur rankings. Brent Delahoussaye is the fourth member of the Tiger golf team in the rankings. After his first fall season with the Tigers, the former University of South Carolina golfer is 32nd in the U.S. Amateur rankings and 84th in the Sagarin computer rankings.

Clemson begins the spring season February 8 in the Mercedes Benz Collegiate, an event held at the Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra, FL.
