Fritz Sargent Endows The Head Golf Coaching Position

May 22, 2001

Frederick A. (Fritz) Sargent of Camino De La Costa, La Jolla, CA has endowed the head golf coaching position at Clemson University. Sargent (`68) is a retired real estate developer. “Golf is such an honorable game and Clemson means so much to us that my wife, Nora, and I wanted to make a contribution to benefit the golf program,” said Sargent. “Larry (Penley) has done such a good job with Clemson’s golf team and we’re proud to contribute.” Last week Sargent played a round of golf at the Walker Course in Clemson with Penley, Mendal Bouknight of Clemson’s Development office and Dick Sargent (`65) of Greenville, SC (Fritz’s brother). Clemson’s golf coach for the past 16 years, Penley has built Clemson’s most successful program on a national basis. Clemson has 13 top 20 finishes and 11 top 15 finishes during Penley’s tenure, the fourth best total in college golf. The Tigers have finished in the nation’s top four on four occasions, also the fourth best total collegiately.

After graduating from Clemson, Sargent spent two years in the service. He then worked for an engineering firm in Atlanta before being employed by another Clemson graduate, Jack Burdette. Sargent eventually went to work with J. Roy Martin and Harry Frampton of Sea Pines Corp., in Hilton Head, SC. In 1979, he started his own real estate development company. Nora Sargent has a degree from Mary Baldwin College with a Master’s degree from Tulane.
