First Varsity Eight Earns ACC Crew-of-the-Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson’sFirst Varsity 8+ crew, which is undefeated in three meets this month against 13 different crews, was named Tuesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference as its first 2014 ACC Crew of the Week.

Composed of senior Laura D’Urso, junior Stephannie Allen, senior Stephanie Cameron, freshman Marie Jacquet, sophomore Milena Heuer, junior Marissa Kump, sophomore Paula Wesselmann, junior Samantha Duggan and freshman coxswain Izze Germano, the Tigers 1V8+ boat posted a time of 6:42.69 in outdistancing crews from 20th-ranked Duke, Iowa, Buffalo and Purdue last Saturday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson.

Earlier this month on March 15, the same crew posted a time of 6:32.3 to nip 19th-ranked Syracuse (6:34.4), Boston University and Eastern Michigan, also at Lake Hartwell. The winning time by Clemson was the sixth-best time by Clemson on Lake Hartwell in school history.

The 18th-ranked (CRCA) Tigers also defeated Eastern Michigan on March 1, also at Lake Hartwell.

The Tigers First Varsity 8+ earned ACC Crew of the Week honors over the First Varsity 8+ crew from Duke, which finished second to Clemson in a season’s best time of 6:49.03, but finished ahead of crews from Iowa, Buffalo, Kansas and Purdue and the First Varsity 8+ crew of Miami, which posted a time of 6:40.0 in defeating Connecticut by 19 seconds in the Indian Creek Waterway in Miami Beach, Fla.           

Clemson will next be in action this Saturday at the Pac-12 Invite at Redwood Shores, Calif. The Tigers will face crews from sixth-ranked Southern California, 13th-ranked Stanford and San Diego.

The 2014 ACC Rowing Championship will be held on Saturday, May 17, on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
