Experience Clemson Game Day through Social Media

When the Tigers played Maryland on Saturday, November 10, Clemson Athletics unveiled a new feature to allow fans to experience an inside view of the Clemson football game day experience through social media.  Fans were able to follow along throughout the entire day using the Official Instragram Account of Clemson Athletics to receive photo updates through the eyes of a Clemson fan on campus on game day.

The goal was to capture what it is like to spend a Saturday on the Clemson campus on game day.  The Tigers’ game against Maryland was Homecoming, and was a great opportunity to showcase the pregame activities around campus. Even if fans were unable to come to Clemson for the game, through this experience, everyone had access to the floats on Bowman Field, fans tailgating on campus, the scene at Tiger Walk, the Baseball Alumni reunion, pregame photos, fan photos and postgame photos.

Clemson Athletics intends to continue and improve the Instagram game day experience from week to week, and plans to give fans a look at Clemson game day traditions as well as behind the scenes access during Tiger athletic events.

The idea to create a platform in which fans can experience a Clemson game day through Instragram originated via a partnership with Clemson University’s College of Business and Behavioral Science MGT 445 Emerging Technologies class, instructed by Associate Professor Jason Thatcher. Through this working partnership, the MGT 445 class was given the task to help improve the Clemson brand and reach through social media venues such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Jared Pike, a student from the MGT 445 class, was assigned to work with Clemson Athletics and was given special access to capture the experiences of a football game day.  With the expertise of Dr. Thatcher, his students, and the use of the Social Media Listening Center in Sirrine Hall, Clemson has the ability to listen for the local, regional, national and global voice surrounding the Clemson brand during the week and on game day when the university is on a national platform.

Fans can follow the Official Instagram Page of Clemson Athletics  on their smartphones by downloading the Instagram app and creating an account, or by visiting www.instagram.com and creating an account there. Game day experience photos will be posted for the remainder of the football season, as well as throughout the winter and spring sport seasons.

All of the photos that were taken on Saturday when the Tigers played host to Maryland can also be viewed on the Official Instagram Page of Clemson Athletics.
