Duke Men’s Tennis Tops Clemson

DURHAM, NC. – The No. 5 ranked Duke University men’s tennis team posted a 6-1 victory over #35 ranked Clemson University on Saturday in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The victory improves Duke to 15-5 overall and 5-0 in ACC play, while Clemson falls to 14-14, 4-2.

Duke took control in the singles matches winning five of six, with the lone loss coming at the No. 1 singles slot. No. 37 ranked Josh Goffi of Clemson defeated Duke’s No. 21 ranked Ramsey Smith 7-6, 7-6 for the Tigers only singles win.

The Blue Devils swept through the rest of the singles matches as No. 60 ranked Andres Pedroso knocked off No. 48 ranked Tom Boniecki (6-7, 6-2, 6-4) at the No. 2 singles slot. Joel Spicher downed Brad Emendorfer (6-4, 6-4), No. 100 ranked Marko Cerenko defeated Luis Garcia (6-4, 6-1), Porter Jones defeated Lee Porter (6-4, 6-2), and Mike Yani downed Sandon Barth (6-4, 6-2).

In doubles play it was a showdown of top ranked teams at the No. 1 slot. Duke’s own No. 8 ranked Root/Smith defeated Clemson’s No. 11 ranked Goffi/Knight 8-5. At the No. 2 spot the Blue Devils duo of Pedroso/Ted Rueger defeated Boniecki/Garcia (8-5), while at No. 3 the Tigers team of Barth/Eric Cohn knocked off Jones/Yani of Duke (9-8).

Clemson will travel to UNC on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. match.
