D’Andrea Named Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs

Bill D’Andrea has been named Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Bert Henderson has been named Executive Director of IPTAY, Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips announced on Wednesday. Both have worked for the Clemson athletic department in some capacity for nearly 20 years.

D’Andrea will oversee and coordinate all external affairs, including IPTAY. Henderson will become the Executive Director of IPTAY and will be responsible for the annual fund and daily operations of the department.

Besides D’Andrea’s total responsibility for IPTAY, his other duties will include the coordination of all athletic department fund-raising and constituent relations, including the ticket office, marketing and sports information. He will also oversee all activities dealing with the department’s capital campaign, including the Westzone Project at Clemson Memorial Stadium.

Henderson will oversee the day-to-day operations of Clemson’s IPTAY Scholarship Fund, the school’s athletic fund-raising organization. He will also have responsibilities in regards to soliciting major gifts for annual giving and the capital campaign.

“The purpose of these appointments is to insure a consistent message across all fronts that impact public perception, goodwill coordination, and proper communication,” said Phillips. “The ultimate goal is to provide the best possible public service to our various constituency groups and grow our fund-raising.

“We are delighted that Bill D’Andrea has agreed to assume the role of coordinator of all external affairs, including the coordination of our capital campaign. Bert Henderson has served the IPTAY office extremely well over the years and knows what it takes to run the day-to-day operation of the annual fund in an efficient manner. Bob Mahony is and will continue to be a key component in our overall fund-raising initiatives.

“Both Bert and Bob have learned from one of the best in the country in George Bennett, who has had a very positive impact on our department and this University for many years.” Bennett has recently announced his retirement.

D’Andrea’s experience at Clemson dates to 1983 when he was a graduate assistant football coach under Danny Ford. After serving as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi, he returned to Clemson in 1986 as Ford’s offensive line coach. He worked in that capacity through the 1989 season. Clemson won the ACC Championship in three of his four years and lost just two games each season.

D’Andrea moved to Vickery Hall when the building was constructed in 1991, serving as the Director of Clemson’s student-athlete enrichment program. The program was named one of the top programs of its kind in the nation by NACDA in September of 1999. The grade point average of Clemson’s student-athletes improved from 2.35 to 2.85 over his 12 years as director of that program. In 2002, D’Andrea was named a senior associate athletic director, serving as the primary athletic administrator under Dr. Terry Don Phillips. D’Andrea earned an undergraduate degree from Indiana State in 1973 and a master’s degree from East Carolina in 1975.

Henderson’s career at Clemson began in 1978 when he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer. He joined the IPTAY staff as an associate executive director in 1985, the first associate director in the organization’s history. He has served under the recently retired George Bennett since 1993. He is a 1978 Mars Hill graduate and earned a master’s degree from Clemson in 1980.
