Clemson’s Schaus, North Carolina’s Fleury Named ACC Co-Players of Week

GREENSBORO, NC – Clemson outfielder Jeff Schaus and North Carolina catcher Mark Fleury have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week for the period of April 20-26.

Schaus had a stellar series against No. 4 Georgia Tech to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 series win. Against the Yellow Jackets, the Naples, Fla., sophomore went 8-for-13 (.615) with one double, one homer, four RBIs, three runs, one walk, no strikeouts, a .923 slugging percentage, and .643 on-base percentage. Schaus’ three-run homer in Saturday’s win proved to be the difference, and he was 4-for-5 with four RBIs in all on Saturday.

Schaus also went 3-for-4 in Friday’s game. But perhaps his biggest moment of the week came against No. 19 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. With two outs in the ninth inning and Clemson trailing 3-1, Schaus blasted a dramatic grand slam to give the Tigers a 5-3 walk-off win. On the week, he was 10-for-22 (.455) with seven runs, one double, two homers, nine RBIs, and two stolen bases in five games, four of which were against top-25 ranked teams. On the season, he is hitting .331 with 10 doubles, one triple, eight homers, 30 RBIs, seven steals, and a .436 on-base percentage thanks to 28 walks against only 15 strikeouts in 169 at-bats.

Fleury sparked the top-ranked Tar Heels to a 4-1 week, including a three-game sweep of Maryland, by hitting .500 (9-18) with five runs, three home runs and 11 RBI. With three doubles, a triple and the three home runs, seven of Fleury’s nine hits went for extra bases for a 1.278 slugging percentage.

Fleury had four multi-hit games, including three versus the Terps. After tying a career high with three hits and belting the go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth in a 7-5 win over UNC Wilmington Tuesday, the Marietta, Ga., junior hit .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, a triple and two home runs in the sweep of Maryland. He went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday’s win, drove in four with a two-run single and a two-run triple Saturday and hit a game-tying solo home run in the sixth in a 2-for-4 effort Sunday. On the season, Fleury is batting .339 with career highs of 10 home runs and a team-high 52 RBI. He leads the Tar Heels with 29 extra-base hits on 16 doubles, 10 home runs and three triples.
