Clemson’s Kelsey Murphy Named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week

Sept. 7, 2009

GREENSBORO, NC – Senior Setter Kelsey Murphy has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of August 31 for her MVP performance at the DePaul Challenge. The New Lenox, Ill. native led the Tigers to a 3-0 record in front of her friends and family, and guided the Tigers to a .357 hitting percentage for the three matches.

For the week, she registered 93 assists (10.33/set), 21 digs (2.33/set), and 11 block assists (1.22/set).

The honor is the first for Murphy, who is a two-time AVCA All-Region selection and a two-time AVCA honorable mention All-America choice. Murphy is a two-time first-team All-ACC selection and was a preseason all-ACC pick this season.

Murphy’s weekend included several milestones. The match against DePaul was her 100th career appearance. She surpassed the 4,000 (4,080 currently) assist mark, the 1,000 (1,003) dig mark, and moved up in the all-time block assists list (334 – 8th) during the two-day tournament.

Some of Clemson’s offensive numbers were eye-popping in the three-match tournament. Clemson outscored its opponents 225-142 in the nine-set sweep of Loyola, Western Illinois, and DePaul. The Tigers hit .357 (127K-26E-283TA) on the weekend. The 26 errors in a three-match stretch are a testament to Murphy’s set selection and execution.

Making the award more unique is that Murphy and her sister Bridget, a freshman at Western Illinois, competed against one another for the first time during the weekend.

Murphy and the Tigers will return to action this weekend at the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic on Sept. 11-12. The Tigers will play the Yellow Jackets on Friday at 7:00 pm, Ole Miss on Saturday at 10:30 am, and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
