June 10, 2007
Daniel Moskos was the number-four selection of the Major League draft on Thursday, June 7. That is a tie for the third highest draft selection in any sport in Clemson history. It is the highest draft pick for a Clemson student-athlete in any sport in…six weeks. Gaines Adams was the fourth selection of the 2007 NFL draft in April, the highest selection by a Clemson football player since 1939.
Moskos tied for the second highest draft selection among Clemson baseball players. Kris Benson was the number-one selection of the 1996 baseball draft, also by the Pirates. Billy Koch was chosen fourth in the baseball draft by Toronto in 1996, the same year as Benson’s selection.
With Moskos’ selection, Clemson is the only school in the nation to have a first round draft choice in football and baseball in each of the last two years. Tyler Colvin was taken by the Cubs with the 13th pick in 2006. Adams was taken in the first round of the football draft earlier this year and Tye Hill was a first round selection of the St. Louis Rams in the 2006 NFL draft.
This is the first academic year in history Clemson has had two top five picks in two different sports. The only previous year Clemson had two top five picks total was 1996 when Koch and Benson were both taken within the first five picks of the Major League Baseball draft.
Clemson and Missouri State are the only schools in the nation with a first-round baseball draft choice each of the last two years.
