Clemson’s Coin Advances To Round of 16 In NCAA Singles Tournament

ATHENS, GA – Clemson women’s tennis player Julie Coin recorded her 100th career victory with a win in the round of 32 of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Tuesday in Athens, GA. She defeated Arizona’s 31st-ranked Dianne Hollands, 6-1, 6-1, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. In reaching the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year, Coin becomes the only Clemson women’s tennis player to accomplish the feat twice in her career. The Tigers have had only seven players advance to the round of 16 of the national tournament in the program’s history. Coin is also the seventh player in school history to record at least 100 singles victories over her career.

Coin, the #2 seed in the tournament, is now 37-4 for the 2004-05 season, including a 27-2 mark in dual matches. She had posted 26 wins over ranked opponents this year. She never trailed in her round of 32 contest, dropping only two games in her two-set victory. Coin won a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Taka Bertrand in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Tournament to reach the round of 32. She will face 9-16-seeded and 13th-ranked Zerene Reyes of Florida in the Sweet 16 on Wednesday at 10:00 AM in Athens, GA.

In NCAA Doubles Tournament action, Coin and Alix Lacelarie won their first round match over 27th-ranked Lauren Colalillo and Kady Pooler of Arizona by a score of 6-3, 7-6(6) to advance to the round of 16. The Tiger tandem is now 14-3 overall and 11-1 in the dual season. They will face fourth-seeded Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda of UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen at 1:30 PM on Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, GA.
