Clemson Women’s Track And Field Team Opens Competition At East Region Championships

RANDALLS ISLAND, NY – The Clemson women’s track and field team opened competition at the East Region Championships at Icahn Stadium in New York City on Friday. Della Clark and Sara Young were the only Lady Tigers to compete in event finals on the first day of competition, while Silja Ulfarsdottir qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles to be contested on Saturday.

Clark opened competition for the Lady Tigers, competing in the hammer throw. The sophomore from Marietta, GA, posted a mark of 160’7″ on her first attempt to finish 21st in the event.

In the Lady Tigers’ second event of the day, Young cleared 12’6″ on her final attempt to finish 13th overall in the pole vault. The sophomore from Laurens, SC, concludes her sophomore campaign as the Clemson record holder in the pole vault. Young set the all-time standard with her clearance of 12’11.25″ at the Orange & Purple Classic.

Silja Ulfarsdottir and Sierra Hill represented the Lady Tigers in the 400m hurdles, the first running event of the day for Clemson. Ulfarsdottir, a senior from Reykjavic, Iceland, took the lead early and crossed the finish line in 57.94 to win her heat. She qualified for the finals of the event with the third-fastest time of the day. Hill finished seventh in her heat with a time of 1:02.99 and concludes her rookie season. This was the first region meet for the freshman from Palmetto, GA.

In the 200m dash, Randi Hinton crossed the finish line in 24.32. The senior from Baton Rouge, LA, owned a season-best time of 23.95 set at the Orange & Purple Classic.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers will compete in five event finals. Silja Ulfarsdottir will take to the track in the finals of the 400m hurdles at 6:00 PM. The Lady Tigers’ 4x400m relay team will conclude Clemson’s competition schedule at the East Region Championships as Ulfarsdottir, Hinton, Hill and Tia Perry compete for a trip to the NCAA Championships.
