Feb. 19, 2009

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team was ranked 14th and three singles players and four doubles teams were listed in the individual rankings in Thursday’s Campbell’s/ITA Tennis polls. The Tigers own a 6-3 record for the year with all three losses coming against top-10 opponents, while Ani Mijacika moved up two spots to #2 after an 8-1 start to the dual-match season.

Mijacika defeated five straight top-20 players from Feb. 1-14 and suffered her only loss during spring play after retiring from injury in the Tigers’ final match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 15. The junior from Makarska, Croatia boasts a 20-4 combined record and has posted 13 total wins over ranked opponents.

Rookie Josipa Bek remained high in the singles poll at #15 following her stellar fall season. She is 6-3 at the flight two position in dual matches and has won her last two contests for a 17-6 overall record. Fellow freshman Keri Wong was ranked at #114 in Thursday’s poll, the first individual poll since Jan. 6. The native of Jackson, MS is 12-7 for the year.

Mijacika and Wong have partnered for doubles play in Clemson’s last five matches and have won four of them, including a pair over top-10 teams. The Tiger tandem’s lone loss in spring play was to the second-ranked team from Fresno State on Feb. 14. They debuted in the rankings at #10.

Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic were also listed in the doubles poll at #27. The duo owns a 4-1 record and a win over a top-25 opponent playing at the second doubles position.

Hadziselimovic and Wong, who paired up for seven matches in the fall and three in the spring for a 9-1 record, were ranked 50th, while Mijacika was also listed at #31 with Federica van Adrichem.

The Tigers will return to the court on Sunday afternoon as they play host to in-state rival South Carolina at 2:00 pm.
