Clemson, SC – The Clemson Tiger women’s tennis team was defeated by South Alabama Sunday afternoon. The 27th-ranked Tigers fell to the 14th-ranked Jaguars by a score of 4-3. The loss was the Tigers first of the season, bringing their overall record to 2-1.
Clemson’s Carmina Giraldo fell to Martina Ondrejkova of South Alabama 6-1, 6-2, at the one singles position. At number two singles, senior Tiger Christina Oldock was defeated by Jaguar Silvia Sosnarova, 6-3, 7-5. Clemson’s Anna Savitskaya dropped a three-set heartbreaker (6-1, 3-6, 7-5) to South Alabama’s Nienke Scheltens at the three singles position. In the number four slot, Laurence Jayet of Clemson was victorious over her South Alabama opponent Viktoria Stoklasova, 6-4, 7-6(2). At five singles, the Tigers’ Milena Stanoytcheva fell to Josien Boverhof by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Clemson’s Ana Stiglic wrapped up singles play with a win over Pam van Boekel of South Alabama, 6-2, 6-3.
The duo of Giraldo and Savitskaya combined to win the number one doubles match 8-6 over the Jaguars’ Ondrejkova and Iva Puflerova. Clemson’s Stanoytcheva and Anna Dolinska were defeated by Boverhof and Scheltens 9-8(7-5) at two doubles. Jayet and Oldock earned a victory at the three doubles slot by a score of 8-6 over South Alabama’s Sosnarova and Stoklasova, to earn Clemson the doubles point for the match.
Clemson (2-1) will travel to Dallas, TX to compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships, February 1-4. The Tigers will then return home to face Furman University on Friday, February 9, at 2:30 PM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
