CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team fell to 18th-ranked South Carolina on Friday night at the Carolina’s Cup at Historic Riggs Field by a score of 5-0. The Tigers fall to 2-3 with the loss, while the Gamecocks improve to 5-0.
Shannon Bigbie put South Carolina’s first goal on the board in the fourth minute of play. The Gamecocks scored two more times in the first half on goals by Blakely Mattern and Jacobs to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Kayla Grimsley netted an unassisted goal in the 66th minute and Mattern scored her second of the game at the 71:35 mark to give the Gamecocks the 5-0 lead.
“It is very difficult to chase in a game against a good team,” said Head Coach Hershey Strosberg. “South Carolina has a lot of depth. They played well and they capitalized on our mistakes. I give them a lot of credit for that.
“There were times that we put together some decent soccer, but we were not dangerous or nearly as effective as we need to be. We have to regroup as a team, which I know we will. We have a big game against Furman on Sunday.”
The Tigers will play host to Furman on Day 2 of the Carolina’s Cup on Sunday. The match will begin at 2:30 PM at Historic Riggs Field. Prior to the Clemson vs. Furman game, South Carolina and UNC Wilmington will meet at 12:00 PM at Riggs.
