Clemson Women’s Soccer Team Defeats Jacksonville Sunday Afternoon at Historic Riggs Field

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team won its second game in three days on Sunday afternoon, defeating Jacksonville by a score of 3-1 at Historic Riggs Field. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Dolphins fall to 1-1.

Jacksonville was the first to score when Liz Fink netted a goal on a free kick from just outside the box in the 14th minute of play. The Tigers’ first goal came on an own goal in the 24th minute when a Dolphin defender misplayed the ball into the net.

Clemson’s second goal was scored at the 25:22 mark. Freshman forward Maggie Murphy passed the ball to sophomore forward Maddy Elder from midfield. Elder received the ball, dribbled to the right corner of the box and sent the ball into the left side of the net to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Elder scored again in the 60th minute for her second goal of the game and third of the season. Freshman forward Jackie Dutton dribbled the ball nearly the length of the field, drawing the Jacksonville defender. Dutton crossed the ball to Elder from the right and Elder put it in the bottom right corner of the net from 10 yards in front of the goal. Elder has now recorded five multi-goal games in her Clemson career, with four coming during her freshman season in 2009.

Clemson took 25 shots in the game, to Jacksonville’s 13. The Dolphin’s had eight corner kicks, while the Tigers had four. Freshman keeper Lauren Arnold notched her second win in goal for Clemson, recording five saves for the game. Dolphin keeper Alexa Rooney posted nine saves.

“I am excited for the team,” said Head Coach Hershey Strosberg following the game. “We talked a lot during preseason about doing things to prepare to compete at this level. I was pleased with the way we battled back, and even put our foot on the gas a little more once we went down a goal. That was the positive response we have been talking about.

“The girls have been working very hard. It’s hot out here and Jacksonville is a good team. We are excited to get our second win and now we will move forward.”

The Tigers’ next two games will be on the road, as they will travel to Nashville, TN to face Belmont on Friday, August 27 before facing Furman on Friday, September 3 in Greenville, SC. The team’s next home game will be on Sunday, September 5 at 1:00 PM against North Florida.
