Clemson University Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips confirmed Friday that the Clemson vs. Texas A&M game will be played at Death Valley on Saturday, September 3. Phillips had acknowledged publicly that Clemson had been approached by ABC Sports, who wished to move the game to Sunday afternoon September 4 at 1:30 PM in order to show the contest to a national audience.
Phillips spoke with ABC executives on Friday and told them Clemson did not wish to move the game to a Sunday afternoon.
“We considered moving the Texas A&M game to a Sunday afternoon game for two reasons,” said Phillips. “Even though we would not receive any extra revenue by moving the game, we certainly would have benefited as a university by having a game shown from Clemson to 100 percent of the nation. Second, we would have reduced the number of home night games during the 2005 season.
“But, the over riding factor was the impact a Sunday day game would have on the Clemson community and its surrounding churches, many of whom are in walking distance of our stadium. Additionally, a Sunday game would have had an negative impact on fans coming from out of town and their ability to attend a Sunday service and the game on the same day.”
