Clemson Volleyball Adds Illinois Prep Standout

May 17, 2004

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson volleyball team has signed an Illinois prep standout to a National Letter of Intent, announced Head Coach Jolene Jordan Hoover. Sue Eckman, a libero/defensive specialist from St. Charles, IL, will join the Tiger team in August. She is the sixth addition to the 2004 Clemson team, joining Laura Boozer, Courtney Lawrence, Leslie Mansfield, Brittany Ross and Meghan Steiner.

“Sue is an excellent passer and a capable defender,” said Hoover. “She will challenge for playing time immediately because of her platform skills. Sue’s talents fit well with the rest of our recruiting class, as we have been able to add talented depth at every position. She is also an excellent student who will be a member of the Calhoun Honors College.”

Eckman is a 2004 graduate of Benet Academy, where she earned three varsity letters in volleyball and was named team captain as a senior. Her team posted a 26-10 record in her final season of high school competition, and were region champions from 2001-2003. She was a member of the Sports Performance Volleyball Club for nine years, serving as team captain for eight of those years. In the Great Lakes Illinois Power League, Eckman’s club team earned first place honors in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and second place in 2004. Sports Performance won the AAU national tournament in 2001 and 2002 and earned third-place honors in 2000. At the Junior Nationals, Sports Performance captured the national championship in 2000 and finished fifth in 2001 and 2002. Off the court, Eckman was a member of the National Honor Society, German Club and earned high academic honors all four years of high school.
