CLEMSON, S.C. – Ian Fuller scored two goals in leading Clemson to a 4-1 upset win over third-ranked Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer match at Clemson, SC Sunday afternoon. It was Wake Forest’s first defeat this season.
Clemson’s Mike Potempa and Ross Goodacre both had one goal and one assist in the match. Alan Woods also had two assists for the Tigers. Clemson scored four goals on just six shots.
With the win, Clemson improves its record to 9-7-2 overall, 2-2-2 in the ACC, while Wake Forest falls to 11-1-5 overall and 2-1-3 in the ACC. Wake Forest is ranked third in the NSCAA poll and fifth in the Soccer America poll. Clemson is unranked.
Clemson scored early with only 2:07 gone in the match. Potempa crossed the ball to Fuller who headed the ball in from four yards out.
Wake Forest evened the score early in the second half (51:03). Gregg Krauss sent the ball to Jamal Seale in the box. Seale crossed the ball to Viktor Litovka who scored from close range.
Fuller broke the tie seven minutes later (58:30) as he scored from close range with assists by Mark Lisi and Woods.
Clemson scored again at the 65:29 mark. Goodacre crossed the ball to Woods who headed the ball to Potempa. Potempa scored from six yards out to give Clemson a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers scored again with only six second left to go in the game. Russel Keifer sent the ball to Goodacre who scored from eight yards out on a break away.
Both Clemson and Wake Forest will be participating in the ACC Tournament on November 11-14 in Winston-Salem, NC.
