CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team was selected to compete in the 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Columbia, S.C. The four-team tournament is set to take place Jan. 26-29, 2018 and will be hosted by the Tigers’ in-state rival, South Carolina.
Clemson is the No. 3 seed in the event, and faces No. 2 seed Southern Cal in the first round. The winner between the Tigers and Trojans takes on the winner of No. 1 seed South Carolina and No. 4 seed Oklahoma in the second round. The team that wins both of its matches in Columbia receives an invitation to play in the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis. on Feb. 9-12, 2018.
The Tigers are coming off a 2017 season in which the team saw significant growth throughout the year. The team, made up of one junior, five sophomores and two freshmen, was 3-7 in its first 10 matches, and then won 11 of its last 17 to conclude the season at 14-13 overall. Head Coach Nancy Harris, who just completed her 20th season at the helm of the program, led Clemson to the NCAA Championships for the 18th time in her tenure in 2017. The Tigers reached the second round before dropping a 4-1 decision, which was much closer than the score indicated, to NCAA Final Four contestant Vanderbilt.
