Clemson to Celebrate Co-Education and Women’s Athletics

Feb. 18, 2005

Game Preview

In association with the observance of National Girls and Women in Sport Day and the Clemson University celebration of 50 years of co-education, the Clemson athletic department will recognize its women’s athletics heritage at the Clemson-Georgia Tech basketball game held February 24th. The 2004-05 season marks the 30th anniversary of women’s athletics at Clemson.

Prior to the tip-off of the Clemson-Georgia Tech basketball game, displays depicting the history of each women’s sport at Clemson will be shown in the concourse area of Littlejohn Coliseum. Current and former athletes and coaches will be representing their respective sport and signing autographs. Also in the concourse area will be a video booth, which will be showing a short history of co-education at Clemson University. A representative from the Women’s Sport Foundation will be on hand to talk about this national observance.

The concourse area housing the displays will open at 5:30 PM. All fans who view the displays will be admitted to the basketball game free of charge. There will also be free giveaways for all who attend. The game, which will be televised live by Comcast Sports Southeast, is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.

Clemson also has invited local schools and recreation groups and will recognize accomplishments of their female student-athletes at halftime.

“This event is Clemson’s way of saying ‘thanks’ to our fans,” says Linda White, associate athletic director and senior women’s administrator at Clemson. “But more importantly, it’s our way of showing that we value and respect the contributions that female athletes have made and will make in the future.”
