Clemson Rowing to Compete at NCAA Championships

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson rowing team will travel to Sacramento, CA this weekend to compete in the NCAA Championships from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, May 30. This is Clemson’s third consecutive year to compete at NCAA Championships, as their Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ crews will race. It is a three-day event, with racing starting Friday morning and ending on Sunday when a National Champion will be determined.

The championship is comprised of 16 of the nation’s top teams. It will include top-ranked Virginia, #2 Princeton, #3 California, #4 Stanford, #5 Yale, #6 Brown, #7 Washington, #8 Wisconsin, #9 Michigan State, #10 Southern California, #11 Michigan, #12 Clemson, #13 UCLA, #14 Washington State, #15 Ohio State and #16 Tennessee.

The Varsity 8+ boats will begin racing Friday morning, as they will have three heats at 15-minute intervals from 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The Tigers will compete in the third heat at 9:15 a.m. They will be racing against Virginia, Princeton, UCLA, Tennessee and Ohio State.

The Second Varsity 8+ crews will then take to the water between 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Clemson will compete at 9:30 a.m. in the first heat as they take on Princeton, Virginia, Yale and Tennessee.

The Varsity 4+ boats will conclude the Friday morning races. The Tigers will compete at 10:15 a.m. in the first of three heats. They will be facing Virginia, California, Michigan State and Michigan. Last season Clemson’s Varsity 4+ boat won the National Championship.

The format for advancing will be the same for each of the boats throughout the weekend. The top three boats in each heat Friday will advance directly to the semifinals on Saturday. The remainder of the boats will compete in the repechage Friday afternoon. The top three boats from that will move on the to semifinals, while the last four will compete in the third finals on Sunday. The top six boats in each event will compete in the grand finals on Sunday, while boats 7-12 will compete in the petite finals.
