Clemson Rowing Competes At Rivanna Romp

Nov. 15, 1999

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Clemson rowing team competed in the Rivanna Romp on the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville, VA, on Sunday.

Clemson B placed eighth in the Varsity 8+ race with a time of 14:47.9, while Clemson’s A boat placed 11th at 14:55.5. Clemson C finished 16th with a time of 15:28.4. Virginia won the race with a time of 14:01.1.

In the Varsity 4+ competition, the Tigers took seventh and eighth place. Clemson B was seventh with a time of 15:41.7, while Clemson B finished eighth with a time of 15:48.4. Virginia took the top two spots in the race with times of 15:05.0 and 15:05.7.

The Tigers placed third and ninth in the Novice 8+ competition. Clemson A posted a time of 15:53.5 for third, while Clemson B was ninth with a time of 16:59.9. Virginia won the race in 14:49.0.

“We had great competition this weekend,” said Clemson head coach Susie Lueck, now in her second season with the Tigers. “It was a good chance for us to see what speed we have against some top-ranked schools in the country. The Varsity 8+ had a good first half of the race, then one of the rowers ‘caught a crab,’ which is when the oar get stuck in the water and drags underneath. They had to stop and get it out, which probably cost them 10 to 15 seconds or more, then they had to get the oar out of the water and start up again. Other than that it was a great day of racing.”

The Rivanna Romp concludes the fall season for the Clemson rowing team. The spring season will begin on March 18, 2000, when the Tigers compete at the Augusta/Aiken City Spring Regatta.
