Clemson Rowing Advances to Grand Finals At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Clemson rowing team’s Varsity 8+ qualified for the grand finals of the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic to be held Sunday on Mission Bay. The Tigers’ Junior Varsity 8+ also advanced to the grand finals. Both boats advanced as top-three finishers.

In the Varsity 8+ race, Clemson finished third behind Southern California and Virginia to advance to the grand finals. Southern California won the race with a time of 6:28.5 while Virginia was second in 6:33.8. The Tigers edged Washington State to finish third with a time of 6:35.91. Washington State was fourth with a time of 6:36.0, and San Diego State finished fifth in 6:47.20. Villanova completed the race with a time of 6:59.12 to finish sixth and Sacramento State was seventh (7:10.23). Clemson will face Washington, California, Notre Dame, Southern California, Virginia, California-Davis, Texas and California Santa Barbara in the grand finals.

The Tigers’ Junior Varsity 8+ boat also qualified for the grand finals, posting a second place finish. ACC rival Virginia won the race while Clemson was second and California finished third. Times for the Junior Varsity 8+ race were unavailable.

“This was an exciting day for Tiger rowing,” said head coach Susie Lueck. “We are very pleased with the results of today’s races and with the effort and accomplishments of our rowers.”
