Clemson Opens Spring Season Monday

Jan. 29, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson will open its 2011 spring golf season on Monday when it is one of 15 teams who will participate in the Jacksonville Invitational in Ponte Vedra, FL. The two-day 54-hole event will be held at the famed TPC at Sawgrass Players Stadium Course, the site of the PGA’s annual Players Championship in May.

Joining the Tigers in the field will be number-one ranked Florida, ACC rival Wake Forest and defending tournament champion East Tennessee State, among others. Clemson finished third at this tournament last year with a 901 score. Ben Martin, now on the PGA Tour, led the Tigers with a third-place finish.

Clemson will be led this year by sophomore Corbin Mills, who was a first-team All-Region selection last year when he helped the Tigers to a #16 finish at the NCAA Championships. Mills finished fifth at this tournament last year with a 223 score. He had the top stroke average for the Tigers in the fall with a 74.56 figure.

Joining Mills in the Clemson lineup will be McCuen Elmore, Jacob Burger, Crawford Reeves and David Dannelly.

Elmore, a red-shirt junior, had a 75.08 average for the fall season, including an 11th place finish at the Carpet Classic. Burger had six consecutive top 20 finishes last year and as a junior has played in more events than any other active Tiger. He has a career stroke average of 73.60. Reeves started in 11 of the 12 tournaments as a freshman and helped the Tigers to a number-two finish at the NCAA regional last year. Dannelly, also a red-shirt junior, is in his first year of eligibility with the Clemson program after transferring from Coastal Carolina.
