Clemson Men’s Track And Field Finishes Second At 2005 ACC Outdoor Championships

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Clemson men’s track and field team finished as the runner-up in the team race at the 2005 ACC Outdoor Championships held at the Mike Long Track and Field Complex on the campus of Florida State University. The Tigers tallied 151 points to Florida State’s winning 222.5 point total. Among the Tigers’ highlights on the final day of competition were All-ACC performances by Ronald Richards, Roy Cheney, Scott Kautz and Mitch Greeley.

Ronald Richards was the runner-up in the 100m dash, crossing the finish line in 10.52. He earned All-ACC honors in the event for the first time in his career. George Kitchens and Robert Ibeh also competed in the finals, scoring for Clemson with times of 10.81 and 10.85, respectively. Kitchens finished in sixth place, and Ibeh brought home a seventh-place finish.

Richards posted his second runner-up honor of the meet with a second-place finish in the 200m dash. He crossed the finish line in 21.06, while teammate Ibeh scored with a sixth-place finish and time of 21.67.

Michael Bolling was the only Tiger to compete in the 400m dash. The senior from Willingboro, NJ, broke the tape in 47.93 to place fifth in his final ACC outdoor meet.

Itay Magidi and Derrick Wyatt competed in the finals of the 1500m run, finishing 7th and 11th, respectively. Magidi crossed the finish line in 3:52.08, bettering his season-best time, while Wyatt clocked a 3:55.86 in the finals. This was the second event in which Magidi scored during the meet, as he earned runner-up honors in the steeplechase on Friday evening.

Matt Clark scored for the Tigers in the 5000m, finishing seventh in 14:26.71. Sean Reilly and Greg Isaacs also competed in the 5000m run, completing the race with times of 15:04.20 and 15:07.00, respectively.

In the 110m hurdles, Roy Cheney earned All-ACC honors for the second time, as he placed third with a time of 14.23. Lydell Perry crossed the finish line in 14.47 to place fourth, and Rashad Gardner also scored in the high hurdles with a seventh-place finish and time of 14.60.

Four Tigers competed in the finals of the 400m hurdles, led by Scott Kautz’s runner-up finish and time of 51.29. That performance was a season-best for the junior from Charleston, WV, and was the second All-ACC honor for Kautz in the intermediate hurdles. Gardner placed fourth with his time of 52.38, Cheney finished in fifth place with a time of 52.58, and Perry scored with a seventh-place finish and time of 54.67.

In the first running event final of the day, the 4x100m relay team of Roy Cheney, Ronald Richards, George Kitchens recorded a time of 40.16 to earn runner-up honors in the event. That was the best time recorded by a Tiger 400m relay team this year, as well as a regional qualifying mark.

The Tigers’ 4x400m relay team of Roy Cheney, Scott Kautz and Rashad Gardner finished second in the final running event of the day as they posted a time of 3:11.17.

Mitch Greeley earned All-ACC honors in his first outdoor meet, placing third in the pole vault with a clearance of 16’6.75″. That was a season-best mark, and an East Region qualifying performance.

Jason Bell placed fourth in the triple jump, leading two other Tigers in the event. Bell posted a mark of 50’4.5″, while Mickey Sheats finished 11th (47’6.25″) and George Kitchens placed 15th (43’6″). Derek Gilson scored for the Tigers in the shot put. The junior from Red Bank, NJ, recorded a mark of 53’3.75″ to place seventh.
