Clemson Men’s Tennis Defeats Winthrop 6-1

Clemson, SC — The No. 27 Clemson Men’s Tennis Team defeated Winthrop 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Clemson Spring Classic at Sloan Tennis Center. Clemson finishes the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record including earlier victories against UNCG, Tennessee Tech, and Troy State.

Clemson began the match dropping the doubles point to Winthrop. Clayton Almeida and Michal Kwiecien upset 17th-ranked Nathan Thompson and Jarmaine Jenkins 9-7 at the number one doubles match. Clemson won the number two doubles match as Goran Sterijovski and Ryan Young defeated Adam Narczewski and Thaigo Barbosa 8-3. Winthrop was able to claim the doubles point as Jorge Padilla and Gary Kilduff downed Clement Reix 8-4 at the flight three match.

Clemson swept the singles matches, but Winthrop would not go down without a fight, as three matches were decided in three sets. Thompson, ranked No. 31 in the nation, was able to come back after dropping the first set to defeat 59th-ranked Almeida 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) at number one singles. At flight two, Sterijovski dropped his first set, but was able to rally to a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Kwiecien. Jarmaine Jenkins defeated Kilduff in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 at the number three position. Robbye Poole won his fourth match of the weekend with a strong 6-0, 6-4 victory over Barbosa at the number six singles.

With the win, Clemson improves to 13-2. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to face 14th-ranked Georgia in Athens.
