Clemson Men’s Soccer to Host Clemson/Nike Invitational this Weekend

Clemson, SC — The Clemson men’s soccer team will host the annual Clemson/Nike Invitational this weekend when it welcomes Furman, Coastal Carolina, and Air Force to Historic Riggs Field for matches on Friday and Sunday.

Clemson is currently 3-3-1 on the season. The Tigers played its Atlantic Coast Conference season opening match against Duke on September 14 by defeating the Blue Devils 2-1. The Tigers the evened their ACC record as they fell to North Carolina State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers are led by senior Paul Souders with two goals and three assists for seven total points and senior Andre Borges with three goals for six total points. Clemson’s defense is led by freshman goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi who has recorded a 1.02 goals against average with 30 saves and two shutouts.

Furman is currently 1-4-2 on the season. The Paladins are led by senior Scott Hoch with three goals and junior Clint Dempsey with two goals. Clemson leads the all-time series with a record of 31-4-1 against Furman.

Coastal Carolina is ranked 17th by College Soccer News and holds a 5-1 record this season. The Chanticleers are led by All-American forward Joseph Ngwenya with five goals and four assists for 14 total points. The Tigers have won all six meeting between the two teams including last year’s sudden death penalty kick shootout in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Air Force enters the weekend with a 5-3 record. The Falcons are led by sophomore Daniel Wasson with seven goals and one assist for 15 total points and junior Marcus Sagastume with four goals and six assists for 14 total points. This weekend’s match will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools.
