Clemson Finishes Eighth against National Field at Cougar Classic

Clemson, S.C.—Ivy Shepherd shot a four-under-par 68 and Melena Barrientos shot a one-under-par 71 on Tuesday, leading Clemson to an eighth-place team finish at the 17-team Cougar Classic.  The tournament was played at the par 72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, SC, which was also the site of Clemson’s first women’s golf tournament in 2013.

“There was a lot of good to take from this first tournament, but there are some aspects of the game we need to tighten up if we are going to play our best golf,” said Head Coach Kelley Hester.  “I am really proud of Melena (shooting under-par in all three rounds) in her college debut and Ivy played a terrific final round today.”

Arkansas won the tournament with an  841 score, one shot better than Baylor.  Clemson finished with an 869 score, five over par for the 54 holes.  Clemson was second among ACC schools, finishing behind fifth place North Carolina (861) and ahead of ninth-place Miami (872) and 14th place NC State (881).

Barrientos, a freshman from Plano, Texas was Clemson’s top golfer for the tournament, as she had rounds of 71-68-71 to become the first Clemson women ‘s golfer to shoot under par in each of her first three career rounds.   She had four birdies and three bogeys on Tuesday and finished the tournament with a team best 12 birdies and six bogeys.  She finished in the top four in the 93-player tournament in par three  scoring (2.75) and par five scoring (4.58).

Shepherd opened with consecutive rounds of 73 on Monday, then played her best golf on Tuesday recording five birdies and a bogey.  Clemson’s  number-two ranked player in school history in career stroke average finished 15th overall.  She played the par four holes a team best 3.90 for the tournament.

“Super Senior”  Calista Rice shot a 75 on Tuesday to finish with a score of  seven over par 223.  Her 71 in the first round tied team honors and was the third best round of her career.  She finished tied for 50th overall.

Sophomore Annabelle Pancake also shot a 75 on Tuesday and finished at nine-over-par for the 54 holes. Her tournament was highlighted by a second-round even-par 72.

Gabriella Tomanka shot a five-over-par 77 and was Clemson’s non-counter on Tuesday.  Playing her s4cond career tournament, she finished at 17-over-par for the tournament.

Clemson returns to the course September 24-26 at the Mason Rudolph Invitational in Franklin, Tennessee.
