Clemson Finishes 4th at Jerry Pate

Oct. 14, 2003

Clemson, SC – The Clemson golf team shot a 26-under-par 826 total for 54 holes, but finished fourth in the 12-team field at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, AL on Tuesday. The 54-hole event concluded Tuesday with 18 holes on the par 71 Old Overton Course.

Larry Penley’s Tigers saw their streak of consecutive top three finishes end at a school record 21 consecutive tournaments dating to the 2001-02 academic year when the Tigers finished sixth at the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, GA. At the same time, the 26-under-par team score was eighth best in Clemson history for a 54-hole event. Clemson’s national championship team of last year reached 26-under-par for just two of its 14 events last year. Clemson won the tournament last year with a 12-under-par score for 36 holes.

Oklahoma State won the tournament with an 818 score, while Georgia was second at 822. UNLV was third at 825, just one stroke better than the Tigers. Augusta State was fifth at 838 and Wake Forest was sixth at 841. Wake Forest senior Bill Haas won the event with a 195 score after a 66 on Tuesday.

Clemson was led individually by Matt Hendrix and Gregg Jones, who had 205 totals for the 54 holes to finish in ninth place. Hendrix, who was member of the US Walker Cup team with Haas earlier this fall, had a 69 on Tuesday, his third under par round of the tournament. Jones had a 71 on Tuesday to finish at 205, his best tournament of the fall.

Brent Delahoussaye, a junior in his first year on the Clemson team, had a career best 66 in the third round and finished at 206, good enough for 13th place. His previous career best was a 68, achieved during his career at South Carolina.

Jack Ferguson had a 69 on Tuesday and finished at 210 for the 54 holes, while Martin Catalioto had a 75 on Tuesday and finished with a 227 score.

Clemson will next be in action at the Hooter’s Match Play Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC November 7-9.
