Clemson Falls 6-1 to South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. The Clemson women’s tennis team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday. The No. 25 South Carolina Gamecocks (2-2) won the Palmetto Series matchup over the Tigers 6-1 at the Carolina Tennis Center.

In doubles action, the Gamecocks earned the point with a 2-0 win. At No. 1, Clemson’s Eleni Louka and Zaina Nait Omar fell 1-6 to South Carolina’s Megan Davies and Mia Horvit. The No. 18-ranked doubles pairing of Silva Chinellato and Emma Shelton defeated Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Sydney Riley 6-2 on Court 2 to secure the doubles point for the Gamecocks. On No. 3, Tate Schroeder and Lana Sipek competed for the Tigers. Their match went unfinished.

Ali DeSpain picked up a point for the Tigers with a singles victory on Court 4. DeSpain topped her opponent 6-4, 6-4. The Court 5 matchup between Sipek and Gabriela Martinez rounded out the match. Sipek won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 4-6. Martinez then won a 10-point tiebreak 11-9, thus giving the Gamecocks the sixth and final point of the afternoon.

  • South Carolina is now 6-1 in the last seven Palmetto Series matches against Clemson.
  • Coaching in her final season, Clemson Head Coach Nancy Harris finishes 12-13 in her career against South Carolina.
  • DeSpain continued to excel at the start of her freshman campaign, improving to 5-0 in singles play.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will remain on the road for another match against an SEC opponent on Saturday, Feb. 1. Clemson is slated to square off with the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) at The Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The match will begin at 4 p.m.
