CLEMSON, SC – Yannick Maden won at both number one singles and doubles in leading Clemson to a 5-2 win over William and Mary in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Clemson, SC Monday afternoon.
With the win, Clemson impoves to 11-3 overall, while William & Mary falls to 9-9 this season. The Tigers are ranked 51st nationally according to the latest ITA poll.
Yannick Maden is now 5-2 overall in singles. His younger brother, Dominique plays at number five and he too was victorious today. Dominique has a team-leading 13-5 record in singles this season.
After the Tigers won the doubles point, Yannick Maden defeated Anton Andersson of William & Mary 6-2, 6-3 to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the match. Zachary Rigsby defeated the Tribe’s Daniel Mihalov at number six singles 6-2, 6-1.
The Tribe won two singles matches, narrowing the Tigers’ lead to 3-2. At number two singles, Ben Guthrie defeated Clemson’s Derek DiFazio 6-2, 7-5. William & Mary also won at number three singles as Jamie Whiteford defeated the Tigers’ Kevin Galloway 6-3, 7-5.
From this point, Gerardo Meza defeated Sebastien Vidal 6-4, 6-4 at number four singles to clinch the match for the Tigers. At number five singles, Dominique Maden defeated the Tribe’s Ilja Orre 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) making the final score 5-2 in the Tigers’ favor.
“Today was a really good effort from our team,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “After a tough loss like we had Friday, you want to avoid a let down. I thought we played well and was ready mentally. William & Mary is a solid team and a well-coached squad. I thought we competed hard and focused well.”
Clemson will play at Florida Atlantic on Friday and at ACC-foe Miami on Sunday in the Tigers’ next action.
