Clemson Baseball Continues Homestand Against Memphis This Weekend

Clemson vs. Memphis Clemson (8-3), ranked as high as #6 in the nation, will play host to Memphis (7-3) this weekend in a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Game times are 4:00 PM (Friday), 2:00 PM (Saturday), and 1:00 PM (Sunday). All three games will be broadcast live on the radio by WCCP (104.9 FM) out of Clemson and can be heard live on the internet at WCCPFM.com. Live stats will also be available at ClemsonTigers.com for all three games.

The Series Clemson and Memphis have never met on the diamond.

The Starting Pitchers In game-one, Memphis will start sophomore righthander Scott McGregor (0-1, 27.00 ERA) on the mound. The Liberty Township, OH native has made one start and one relief appearance for a total of 3.0 innings pitched. He has allowed eight hits and no walks with a strikeout. The Tigers will counter with junior righthander David Kopp (1-1, 4.11 ERA) on Friday. The Margate, FL native has made three starts for a total of 15.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 17 hits (.283 opponents’ batting average) and six walks with 13 strikeouts.

In game-two, Memphis will send out freshman righthander Marc Ashley (0-0, 2.61 ERA) on the mound. The Collierville, TN native has made two starts for a total of 10.1 innings pitched. He has yielded 11 hits (.282 opponents’ batting average) and five walks with five strikeouts. The Tigers will counter with sophomore lefty Ryan Hinson (0-0, 1.20 ERA) on Saturday. The Rock Hill, SC native has made three starts for a total of 15.0 innings pitched. He has yielded 15 hits (.263 opponents’ batting average) and five walks with 12 strikeouts.

In game-three, Memphis will start senior lefty Lance Scoggins (0-0, 1.42 ERA). The Memphis, TN native has made two starts for a total of 6.1 innings pitched. He has allowed five hits (.238 opponents’ batting average) and seven walks with one strikeout. Clemson’s starter for game-three on Sunday has yet to be determined.

The Memphis Tigers Memphis, led by third-year Head Coach Daron Schoenrock, enters the series with a 7-3 overall record after falling twice in two games at Samford on Tuesday and Wednesday. Memphis, who is 0-3 on opponents’ home fields, had won its previous seven games, all without scoring more than five runs in any of those seven games.

Memphis is hitting .236 as a team with a .310 on-base percentage. Bill Moss is hitting a team-best .385 with three home runs and six RBIs. Joey Lieberman is also hitting .343 with two doubles and two triples. K.K. Chalmers has five of the squad’s eight stolen bases and 61 in his career, just five shy of the Memphis career record of 66.

Memphis has a 2.45 ERA and .199 opponents’ batting average. The staff has 66 strikeouts against 29 walks in 88.0 innings pitched. It has also combined to throw just one wild pitch and allow 14 extra-base hits. Sophomore righthander Matt Yokley has allowed one unearned run, five hits, and five walks with 13 strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched over four relief appearances this season. Memphis sports an outstanding .974 fielding percentage as well.

The Clemson Tigers Clemson enters this weekend’s series against Memphis with an 8-3 overall record after defeating #17 Coastal Carolina 4-0 on Wednesday. The Tigers, who are in the midst of an eight-game homestand, are 8-2 at home this season. Clemson also brings a #6 national ranking into this weekend’s series.

The team is hitting .283 with a .366 on-base percentage. Brad Chalk is hitting a team-best .429 with a .510 on-base percentage. He has reached base via a hit or walk in 38 straight games dating back to 2006. Doug Hogan is hitting .400 with four homers and seven RBIs, while Marquez Smith is batting .333 with two homers and a team-best 11 RBIs.

The pitching staff has a 3.14 ERA and .245 opponents’ batting average. It has combined to strike out 90 against 30 walks. Daniel Moskos has a team-high two saves, while Stephen Clyne has gone 26.2 consecutive innings without allowing a run dating back to last year. The team is fielding at a .963 clip as well.

Tigers Sport Experience & Youth in Lineup Clemson entered the season ranked in the top five in virtually every poll due to the fact of several veterans with considerable experience, including Brad Chalk, and Doug Hogan) who is in his first season as the starting catcher. Freshmen Addison Johnson, Wilson Boyd, J.D. Burgess, and Ben Paulsen have all been regulars in the lineup of late.
