Ashlan Ramsey, Team USA Win Gold at Spirit International

TRINITY, TX – Clemson women’s golfer Ashlan Ramsey took part in the Spirit International October 30-November 2, and Team USA won the overall competition.  20 countries competed in the prestigious tournament, with each country sending its four most impressive amateurs, two males and two females.

The United States team, captained by LPGA player Paige MacKenzie, was comprised of Ramsey, Ally McDonald of Mississippi State, Jordan Niebrugge of Oklahoma State, and high school senior Scottie Scheffler. The four combined to shoot 33 under par as a team in the four-ball stoke play format, and the United States defeated second-place France by six strokes to retain the Gold medal.

Ramsey and McDonald came in second behind the French team in the women’s competition.  The U.S. women’s team shot eleven under par and lost by one shot to France.  Individually, Ramsey finished tied for 24^th among all females in the field, though that score is calculated solely by individual birdies and not overall score. She is currently ranked the number one female amateur in the world according to Golfweek.

Niebrugge and Scheffler shot 22 under par over 54 holes to give them a six shot win over Finland in the men’s competition.

The tournament is normally a 72-hole four day event, however heavy rain in the area prevented play on Wednesday, leaving the teams to play 54-holes over three days.

With the 2013 win, the United States has won gold in the team competition in the last three Spirit International tournaments, which is played every two years.
