Josipa Bek, Women’s Tennis, Freshman, Osijek, Croatia
Bek earned All-America honors in singles and doubles at the 2009 NCAA Women’s Tennis Individual Singles & Doubles Championships held in College Station, TX May 20-25. She is only the second freshman and just the fifth different player in school history to advance in both the national singles and doubles tournaments in the same year, joining an impressive list that includes Gigi Fernandez (1983), Julie Coin (2004, 2005), Ani Mijacika (2008) and Carol Salge (2008).
In singles, Bek earned All-America status by earning a national seed and winning a pair of matches in the NCAA Singles Championships. Bek defeated players from Fresno State and Notre Dame before falling to the third-seeded player in the national singles draw from Arkansas.
Bek and partner Ina Hadziselimovic became only the fourth doubles team in school history to advance to the quarterfinals of the national tournament. The pair opened the tournament with an upset over Georgia’s sixth-ranked team, followed by a win over a tandem from TCU before falling in the third round to the 10th-ranked team in the nation from Tennessee. In reaching the tournament quarterfinals, Bek and Hadziselimovic earned All-America honors in doubles for the 2009 season and finished with a 17-8 record.
