ACC Announces Pairings For 2009 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament

GREENSBORO, NC – The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the pairings for the 32nd Annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, which is set to tip-off on Thursday, Mar. 5 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC. The Maryland Terrapins clinched the top seed with a win on the final day of the regular season while Florida State finished earned the #2 seed after tying the Terps for the Seminoles’ first regular season title. North Carolina and Duke round out the top four teams who earned a first-round bye for the event.

The Clemson women’s basketball team and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will kick off the tournament in the 5-12 match-up on Thursday at approximately 11:00 am. Clemson finished with a 2-12 record in ACC play, along with Miami and Virginia Tech, but the Lady Tigers ended up at #12 due to the tie-break procedures. Thursday’s game will be televised on the conference’s regional networks which include Fox Sports Net South, Fox Sports Net Florida, ComCast Sports Net and the New England Sports Network.

The Lady Tigers and Yellow Jackets have met twice this season with Georgia Tech posting the win each time. The Yellow Jackets won by a 49-41 margin in the match-up in Atlanta on Feb. 1 and then defeated Clemson, 89-54, on the Lady Tigers’ Senior Day on Feb. 22. The two teams have met just four times in the conference tournament with the Lady Tigers holding the 3-1 edge in those games. The last meeting was in the quarterfinals of the 1993 championship when Clemson posted an 87-66 victory.
