CLEMSON, S.C. – Solo home runs by Mac Starbuck, Matthew Lumsden and Chad Fairey along with a solid starting performance by Keyshawn Askew led Purple to a 4-3 win over Orange in the first of three Orange & Purple Scrimmages at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Thursday. Purple took a 1-0 lead in the series, which features three seven-inning contests and marks the end of the fall practice season.
Orange scored two runs in the top of the first inning before Starbuck led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer. Lumsden belted a 400+ foot home run to center in the third inning to tie the score, then Fairey crushed another 400+ foot homer to center in the fourth inning to give Purple the lead for good. Starbuck added an insurance run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the fourth inning, which was crucial due to Regan Reid’s two-out, run-scoring single in the seventh inning that narrowed Purple’s lead to 4-3.
Starbuck had a game-high two RBIs, while Kier Meredith paced Orange with two of the team’s four hits.
Askew allowed just two hits, two runs and no walks with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched to earn the win. Carson Spiers did not allow an earned run in the seventh inning to record the save. Orange starter Jackson Lindley suffered the loss.
The Tigers play the second Orange & Purple Scrimmage at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
