Women’s Tennis To Open Play At ITA National Team Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, SC – The 12th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team will begin competition at the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon. The Tigers are scheduled to play second-seeded California in the first round at 4:30 pm (Eastern Time) at the Nielson Tennis Stadium in Madison, WI. The University of Wisconsin will serve as host to the tournament for the 22nd consecutive year.

Ani Mijacika leads the Clemson squad with an 18-3 singles record and boasts the number-four national singles ranking. The junior from Makarska, Croatia has won three straight matches over top-10 ranked opponents and is the reigning ACC Player-of-the-week.

The Tigers advanced to the National Indoor Championships round of 16, a new format for the 2009 season, with wins over Boise State and Auburn in ITA Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 31-Feb. 1. They are 5-1 on the year with the lone loss suffered by a narrow 4-3 margin to sixth-ranked Georgia on Feb. 7.

Cal is currently ranked #2 in the ITA Rankings with victories over #45 Long Beach State, #36 Washington and San Diego State for a 3-0 record. The Golden Bears have five players ranked in singles, led by Marina Cossou at #13, and two teams ranked in doubles. Visit the ITA Tennis website for more information.

Clemson At The National Indoor Clemson will be making its fifth total appearance and fourth in the last five years at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, although this is the first year the team has advanced through the regional format, which is in its inaugural year. Last season, the Tigers, hindered by injuries, fell to Cal, Fresno State and UCLA. During the 2007 event, Clemson fell to Notre Dame in the opening match but rebounded to record a victory over Brigham Young and upset UCLA. In the 2005 tournament, the Tigers defeated #4 UCLA and won a forfeited match by Tulane after falling to Kentucky in the opening round. In the 1994 season, the Tigers suffered a loss to #2 Stanford in the first round. They then defeated Mississippi before falling to Southern California in their third match of the tournament.

The Tigers Against The Field Clemson and Cal have meet five previous times in history with the Golden Bears claiming the victory in each. Most recently, Cal defeated the Tigers, 4-2, in the first match of the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Overall, Clemson owns a combined 112-141 record against the 15 teams in this year’s field. The Tigers won matches over North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Duke en route to their 2008 ACC title, while Clemson faced Cal, Fresno State and UCLA in last season’s National Indoors.
