Women’s Tennis Team To Compete At ITA Southeast Regional Championships

The Clemson women’s tennis team will travel to Winston-Salem, NC, to compete in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships this weekend. The Tigers will begin competition on Thursday, Oct. 21, and the tournament will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 24. The singles finalist and champion, and the doubles champions will be invited to play in the 2004 ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship to be held in Ann Arbor, MI, from Nov. 4-7.

Richele LeSaldo will begin play in the singles qualifying round on Thursday at 1:00 PM. She is slated to face Larisa Bekmatova of Winthrop in her first round of play. In open draw singles play, Ioana Paun is set to play Christine Simpson of Kentucky at 9:00 AM on Friday. Daniela Alvarez, seeded seventh, will also begin play on Friday morning at 10:30 AM as she takes on Tennessee’s Vicki Jones. Maria Brito is the 10th seed, and will face Jenna Loeb of Wake Forest at 12:30 PM on Friday.

In doubles action, Richele LeSaldo and Ioana Paun will begin play on Thursday at 4:30 PM. The Tigers’ duo will face Ana Maria Cibils and Jennifer Klaschka of Middle Tennessee State in their first-round match. Third-seeded Alvarez and Brito received a first-round bye, and they will face the winner of Tennessee Tech (Boonzaaier/Tasheva) and Winthrop (Caceres/Takahashi) in a second-round match on Friday. Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie will also begin doubles play on Friday, and will face the winner of Wake Forest (Offutt/Schwartz) and UT-Chattanooga (Adams/Wilson). This will be Lacelarie’s first competition of the 2004-05 season, as she has been recovering from an off-season surgery.
