Women’s Tennis Stuns 18th Ranked BYU

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team defeated 18th ranked Brigham Young, 5-4, Tuesday morning in Clemson, giving the Tigers a 2-5 record.

Clemson freshman Carmina Giraldo was defeated at number one singles, by 68th-ranked Gee Gee Garvin 6-2, 7-5. At two singles, Clemson senior Kate-Maree Mair took the match from Brooke Leavens, by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The Tigers’ Catherine Galvin triumphed at three singles over Kim Kelly, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. At four singles, Clemson senior Cecilia Hincapie fell to Jodi Richardson of BYU by the score of 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Cinny Clausen of Clemson took a loss to Tara Ferguson 6-4, 6-2, in the number five spot. At number six singles, Clemson sophomore Christina Oldock was victorious over Khushchehr Italia 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, the Tiger team of Giraldo and Mair defeated Garvin and Richardson, 8-2. At two doubles, Oldock and Galvin of Clemson took the loss to Kelly and Leavens, 8-3. The pair of Hincapie and Clausen were victorious over Shari Smith and Italia at three doubles, 8-4.

Clemson (2-5) will take on Georgia at 2:30 pm this Friday March 5 in Athens.
