Women’s Tennis Fares Well at Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Clemson women’s tennis team competed in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic last weekend at Alabama.

Senior Kate-Maree Mair entered the match seeded second in the Women’s Open Singles B draw. Martina Nedorostova of Texas A&M defeated Mair 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of competition, before Mair defeated Alabama’s Kathleen Mele 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the consolation matches. Judith Boban of Auburn defeated Mair 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals of the consolation matches, then Mair defeated Tulane’s Maiko Cook 6-1, 6-2 to finish the tournament in third place of the consolation draw.

Junior Stefanie Woerz lost to Alabama’a Selia Mathew 7-5, 6-1 in the first round of the Women’s Open Singles A draw. She was defeated by Lisa Dingwall of Texas A&M 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the consolation matches, and she lost to Daniela Greco of Chattanooga 6-1, 6-3 in the South draw of the consolation matches.

Junior Shir Noy was defeated by Stacy Ryan of Vanderbilt, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the Women’s Open Singles B competition. Chattanooga’s Iris Karabelas defeated Noy in the first round of consolation matches, 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-5.

The doubles team of Mair and Woerz defeated Andrea Lord and Sloan Eimear of Mississippi State 8-4 in the first round of the Women’s Open Doubles A draw, then dropped an 8-5 decision to Florida State’s Jessica Balbuena and Marina Raic in the first round of consolation matches. Chattanooga’s Daniela Greco and Iris Karabelas defeated Mair and Woerz 8-6 in the South draw of consolation.

Noy teamed with Tina Rautajoki of Southern Mississippi to defeat Alabama’s Rebecca Baum and Florida State’s Christy Travis 8-5 in the first round of the Women’s Open Doubles B draw.
