Women’s Tennis Falls to Virginia, 7-2

CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team made a little bit of history today by defeating Clemson 7-2 at Clemsons Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The win was the Cavaliers first over the Tigers in a regular season and only the second win all-time against Clemson. Virginia defeated Clemson in the 1989 ACC Tournament.

The win was the second in a row for the Cavaliers as they conclude the regular season with a 13-8 overall record (4-4 in the ACC). The Tigers are now 7-13 overall and 3-5 in the ACC. Both teams will begin preparations for the ACC Tournament at Georgia Tech on April 23-26.

The Cavaliers secured the victory by winning five of six singles matches, including four in straight sets. Paige Boiko won for the fifth time in her last six matches by defeating Stefanie Woerz 6-4, 6-1 at #1.

Stacy Gingold downed Etresia Kruger 6-4, 6-2 at #2 for her fifth consecutive win. Senior co-captain Emily Hill ended a two-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Christina Oldock at #3.

Freshman Christie Schweer keeps rolling along following a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Devrin Carr for her sixth victory in a row.

In doubles Schweer and fellow freshman Leslie Cook won for the 14th time in the last 15 matches with an 8-4 win over Carr and Catherine Galvin.
