Women’s Basketball Upsets Auburn, 72-61

MYRTLE, BEACH, SC – Chrissy Floyd scored 23 points, while Marci Glenney added 14 in leading Clemson to a 72-61 upset win over ninth-ranked Auburn at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center at Myrtle Beach, SC Thursday night.

With the win, Clemson improves to 8-2 overall, while Auburn suffered its first defeat and now has a 12-1 record this season. Auburn was ranked ninth by the Associated Press while Clemson is unranked. This is the second ranked team Clemson has beaten this season. The Lady Tigers defeated third ranked Duke 93-75 on December 9, at Clemson.

Floyd was 7-12 from the floor and 8-10 from the free throw line. Nuria Forns was the other Clemson player hitting in double digits as she had 11 points.

Auburn was led in scoring by Carol Smith with 24 points, Tasha Hamilton had 20 points for Auburn. Auburn’s leading scoring Lori Nero came into the game averaging 16.2 ppg. and 6.8 rpg. In tonight’s game she only scored one point and had five rebounds.

In the first half, Clemson had a 10-8 lead with 14:32 left in the first half. Clemson went on a 13-3 run and built a 23-11 lead with 8:53 remaining. Chrissy Floyd had six points in Clemson’s rally.

From this point Auburn scored 17 unanswered points and took a 28-23 advantage with 1:31 to go. Auburn’s Tasha Hamilton scored six points in this run.

Clemson’s Nuria Forns scored on a jumper with 5.3 seconds remaining and the half ended with Auburn leading 28-25.

Clemson had a 42-41 lead with 10:28 remaining in the game. Clemson outscored Auburn 12-4 and took a 54-48 lead with 5:29 remaining. Clemson’s Chrissy Floyd scored six points in this Lady Tiger rally.

The closest Auburn came in the final 5:29 was six points (56-50) with 4:13 left in the game.

Clemson will play host to Wofford on Thursday, December 28, in the Lady Tigers’ next action. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
