Whitehurst Named to Maxwell Watch List

June 21, 2005

Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is one of 50 preseason candidates for the 2005 Maxwell Award. The announcement of the list was made by Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski in Philadelphia, the home of the award, on Tuesday afternoon. The Maxwell Award, which has been presented for each of the last 68 years, is given each year to the Collegiate Player of the Year as chosen by a panel of sports media.

Whitehurst will be entering his fourth and final year as Clemson’s starting quarterback. He already owns the Clemson records for passing yardage (7182) and completions (588) and attempts (1028). The Clemson graduate is the career leader among active ACC quarterbacks in passing yards and completions and is 15th overall in career total offense in league history. A 2,750-yard senior year would allow him to become just the third player in ACC history to reach 10,000 yards of total offense in a career. Overall, he holds 29 Clemson records.

Ten semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in October and three finalists will be released in late November. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot Football Awards Show on ESPN in early December.
