Wake Forest Outlasts Clemson In ACC First Round Action

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Host No. 5 Wake Forest advanced past No. 4 seed and 15th-ranked Clemson in the quarterfinal nightcap at the ACC Women’s Soccer Championship when Alena Thoms netted the final shot of the shoot out between the two teams.

The teams ended regulation with the score tied 1-1. Both teams dug in defensively and the score remained tied at one after two 15 minute overtime periods.

In the shoot out, both teams connected on each of their first two shot attempts. The Lady Tigers missed their third attempt. Wake’s A.B. Robbins missed on the Demon Deacons’ fourth attempt and both teams headed into the fifth and deciding shot tied at 3-3.

Wake Forest goalie Erin Regan stepped in front of Paige Ledford’s shot to give Thoms the chance to deliver the game winner. Thoms scored and the Deacons (9-7-2) advance to face No. 1 North Carolina.

Clemson’s Deliah Arrington got the scoring started in the first half with a goal in the left corner of the net. Arrington scored on a breakaway and was assisted by Tricia Williams The goal came at the 21:15 mark.

In the second half, Wake Forest responded when Stacy Roeck scored from 12 yards out at the 60:22 mark. Roeck was assisted by Emily Taggart and Joline Charlton.

“Overall, I am pleased with our performance,” said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. “It is a tough way to go out but the game does go down on our record as a tie. Wake Forest is a very good team and playing a hard game like this will help us prepare for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.”

The Lady Tigers (13-4-1) now focus their attention on the NCAA Tournament which begins next Thursday at 16 sites yet be determined.
