Volleyball Defeats Winthrop, 3-0

CLEMSON, SC — The Clemson volleyball team, ranked 18th nationally, opened its home season Tuesday night with a 15-2, 15-0, 15-5 win over Winthrop in Clemson’s Jervey Gym. The Tigers won their home opener for the eighth-straight season.

The Tigers were led by freshman Mallory Benson, who hit .769 with 10 kills, no errors and 13 attempts. Senior Cindy Stern had 12 kills, two errors and 26 attempts for a .385 attack percentage and led Clemson with five block assists. Sophomore Jodi Steffes had nine kills, one error and 14 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Jessi Betcher had 32 assists to pace the Tigers, while Stern and senior Skye Frost each added seven digs for Clemson.

Senior Kara Galer led Winthrop with six kills, and senior Cristi Curtis had a .214 hitting percentage and 16 assists to top the Eagles. Sophomore Erin Lehman led the team with 10 digs.

Clemson (5-0) will play host to the Big Orange Bash in Jervey Gym this weekend. The Tigers will face Kentucky on Friday at 7 p.m. and will take on #30 Notre Dame Sunday at 2 p.m. Kentucky and Notre Dame will play Saturday at 2 p.m. Winthrop drops to 2-2 with the loss.
