Virginia Defeats Clemson 3-1

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia volleyball team defeated the Clemson Tigers 3-1 (4-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-13) Saturday evening at Jervey Gym. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in league play while the Tigers drop to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.

Clemson won the first game easily, then Virginia evened the match at one game each. The Cavaliers took a 15-9 decision before a tough battle in the fourth and decisive game. Clemson held an 8-1 lead, but the Cavaliers fought back to take an 11-8 lead. The Tigers won four points in a row to go up 12-11 but held the lead only momentarily as Virginia once again evened the match at 12 points each. The score would be tied again at 13 before the Cavaliers scored the final points of the match.

Kiki Dallao led the Tigers with 27 kills and a .309 hitting percentage. Dallao also tallied 14 digs and three blocks. Jodi Steffes recorded 12 kills with nine digs while Meredith Kirtland added 10 kills with 15 digs and seven blocks. Anne Berki also tallied seven blocks (one solo) and Laura Jensen added another ten digs. Jessi Betcher handed out a team-high 58 assists with 12 digs and three service aces.

The Cavaliers were led by Paige Davis who tallied a double-double with 20 kills and 17 digs. Jenny Harmon added 16 kills with eight blocks (two solo) while Deanna Zwarich recorded 15 kills with 11 digs and five block assists. Abby Whittenburg dished out a match-high 63 assists with 13 digs and four block assists.

Clemson is on the road next week as they travel to Duke University on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. ACC contest. The Tigers go back to the state of North Carolina on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. conference match at Wake Forest University.
