Two Tigers Record Top 10 Wins

Clemson, SC — Sam Saunders and Jacob Burger both recorded top 10 finishes in different amateur golf events on Sunday. Saunders, a junior on the Clemson team this coming year, finished sixth at the Cardinal Amateur in Greensboro, NC, while Burger finished fifth at the South Carolina State Amateur in Clinton, SC.

Saunders had rounds of 75-68-70 for a 213 total on the par 70 Cardinal Golf Club. He finished five shots behind champion Zack Sucher, a player on the University of Alabama team. It was the fourth top 15 finish in a major amateur tournament for Saunders this summer. He was eighth at the Players Amateur, 11th at the Southern Amateur and 15th at the Sunnehanna. Saunders next event will be the United States Amateur at Pinehurst #2 August 18-24.

Joining Saunders at the United States Amateur will be Burger, who will be a freshman at Clemson this year. The native of Orangeburg, SC finished fifth at the South Carolina Amateur at Musgrove Mills in Clinton, SC. Burger had rounds of 69-72-73-73 for a one under par 287 total. Burger was the top finisher among four current Clemson golfers in the field.

Luke Hopkins, the defending champion, had rounds of 75-72-71-76 for a 294 total that was good enough for 23rd place. Ben Martin was 33rd with a 296 total. The rising junior from Greenwood had rounds of 69-76-77-74 for an over par total.
