Troy Mathis to Transfer from Clemson

July 14, 2006

Clemson, SC – Clemson reserve guard Troy Mathis will transfer to another institution for the 2006-07 season. Clemson Head Coach Oliver Purnell made the announcement on Friday.

“After multiple, recent meetings with Troy, I believe it is in his best interest to transfer to another school in order for him to reach his goals on and off the court,” said Purnell. “I wish him the best and will do whatever I can to help him find his new school.”

Mathis was academically eligible to return to the program.

“I plan to transfer to a junior college where I can maximize my playing opportunities,” Mathis said. “By going to a junior college, I won’t have to sit out another year.”

Mathis, a native of Raleigh, NC played in 20 games last season and averaged 2.9 points and 0.5 rebounds per game. He shot 42.2 percent on three-point shots and 39 percent overall. He added five assists and three steals in his 113 total minutes. His best game took place against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in the San Juan Shootout in December when he scored 15 points in 15 minutes on 5-6 three-point shooting. He also contributed 10 points, all in the first half, in the win at Clemson over Florida State on January 4.
