CLEMSON, SC – On Friday, October 5 at 5:00 PM on the green next to Tillman Hall, Clemson University’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences in conjunction with Bartlett Tree Experts will conduct a Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony in remembrance of the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy. The Clemson University family as well as over 1000 Virginia Tech Alumni from the surrounding area have been invited to the event.
Dr. Pat Layton, Chair of the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources will act as emcee for the event. Dr. Layton encourages all who can to attend and participate in the ceremony. In acknowledging this act of generosity from Bartlett Tree Experts, an urban forestry company based in Stamford, CT, Dr. Layton stated, “This Over cup Oak that is to be planted will serve as a living memorial to all Virginia Tech Hokies and those who visit the Clemson University campus that for a time in April of 2007 “all of us were Hokies.” The initiation of the Bartlett Tree Experts Company to invite campuses to participate in this program is just one example of how all of us share in the sorrow and healing of Virginia Tech.”
The final steps of planting will take place on Friday afternoon and members of the program will pour life-giving water upon the tree as the event concludes. A bronze plaque on marble base will be placed at the foot of the tree to inform the public of the oak’s significance.
Alan Jones will represent Bartlett on Friday and Clemson University faculty who are Virginia Tech alumni, Clemson University’s Student Body President Josh Bell, and representatives from Virginia Tech alumni will share other comments. The Tillman Carillon will provide reflective tones for the event and at the conclusion of the planting, 32 chimes will be sounded in memory of those who lost their lives.
